SHUT DOWN NORLITE
Norlite is a hazardous waste incinerator in the City of Cohoes which has been poisoning the lungs of Cohoes residents for far too long.
Amongst many other deadly carcinogens, the incinerator spews silica dust which is well documented to cause lung cancer. Just swiping your finger on a car's windshield in the vicinity of the factory will yield copious amounts of the material as documented by this image taken by activists.
The factory is located near large population centers in Cohoes and Troy and is likely behind numerous cases of illness and disease in the surrounding community. Regardless of the outcome of this race, shutting down Norlite will remain a foremost priority of our movement!
SAVE THE PINE BUSH PRESERVE
Before Europeans settled in Albany, all of it and the surrounding area used to be a beautiful pine forest with sand dunes. Now, only 3,350 acres left. The remaining Pine Bush is a national treasure and must be protected at all costs.
But greedy developers are working with the Town of Guilderland on several projects that will bulldoze additional acres of the preserve. One especially egregious proposal is for a new gas station. Our movement will stop any and all new developments of the Pine Bush preserve and protect the endangered species that live there.
STAND WITH FRIENDS OF THE MAHICANTUCK
We are committed to help end development of the last remaining woodland parcel of the Troy waterfront. The parcel is protected by an organization called Friends of The Mahicantuck and is the ancestral land of the Schagthicoke Nation who used it as a quarry. We must respect the historic and ancestral rights of Native Americans while preserving green space in our communities.
SHUT DOWN THE RENSSELAER COUNTY JAIL
Rensselaer County Jail is the only jail in New York State that participates in a voluntary program whereby they receive money from the federal government for incarcerating immigrants whose only "crime" is that they are undocumented.
Undocumented immigrants are NOT criminals. They came here to make a better life for themselves just like the rest of us and we must treat them with dignity and respect not throw them into prisons.
Furthermore, the well documented abuse of inmates by the corrections officers at the facility in and of itself should be sufficient to shut down this facility.
Our country already houses more inmates both in total numbers and per capita than any country in the world. Yet, we are not any safer for it. Changing the prison industrial system must begin in our own backyard.
POWER EMPIRE STATE PLAZA WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Sheridan Hollow Alliance for Renewable Energy (SHARE) is a coalition of community, faith, environmental justice and climate action groups who successfully stopped the proposed Sheridan Hollow fossil fuel power plant. Now we must redirect these savings towards a renewable energy solution.
We will ensure that this happens!
